September Report

Introduction

A monthly report on the birds detected at the BurkeBox Haikubox. The box in located in the lower Wallingford area of Seattle, Washington.

Data

We start with all the Haikubox data for BurkeBox. The observations are from September 23, 2023 through September 30, 2024.

The Haikubox shows the score (probability) from the prediction model for each species detection. Only observations with prediction score greater than 0.5 will be included in this analysis.

For the month of September, 57 species were observed (compared to 52 for August). Of these 0 species were new in September. There were 15554 detections across all species for the month (compared to 11953 for August).

Special Note

European Starling counts are way up compared to August. They appeared on 11 days with 45 detections in August. In September Starlings appeared on 20 days with 788 detections. This high count is likely because the fig tree in the backyard has a good crop of figs and groups of Starlings come to feed.

Barn Owl counts are also up over August - 13 days, 21 detections in August, 22 days and 49 detections in September. Could one or more Barn Owls be roosting in the tall backyard pine trees?

All Birds

The number of unique species detected on each day in September.

The total number of detections for all birds on each day in September.

These 15 species each had over 15 days of detection. The panels are ordered by total number of detections for that species.

Another view of the same data with a smooth line added to show the trends in detection.

Appendix
